Pregnancy announcement shirts: ideas that look good in photos

There are a hundred ways to announce a pregnancy, and some of them involve a lot of balloons. A shirt is the quiet option. You don't have to make a speech or stage anything. You put it on, someone notices, and the news tells itself. Then there is the photo, which is how most people will actually hear.

That last part is where shirts succeed or fail. Here is what makes one work, a few ideas depending on who is wearing it, and how to get a photo worth sending.

Words that read on a phone screen

Most of the people you tell will see your announcement as a small square in a feed or a group chat. A design that looks sweet in person can turn into an unreadable smudge at that size. Before you choose, picture it at the size of a thumbnail.

• Short. A few words on the main line. If people have to zoom in to read it, most won't.
• Big letters, strong contrast. Dark print on a light shirt, or light on dark. Pale pink on white disappears in photos.
• Careful with script. Delicate handwriting fonts are lovely up close and hard to read in a small photo. A plain line of text next to a little illustration usually reads best.
• Test it. Take a photo of the shirt, shrink it on your screen, and hand your phone to someone who hasn't seen it. If they get it in two seconds, it works.

Ideas, depending on who's wearing it

The first-time mom

The bump

The second (or third) time around

Dads get overlooked in announcement photos, and a shirt is an easy way to put them in the picture. The "This Guy Is Going to Be a Daddy... Before you know, or for the reveal

Getting the photo right

• Light first. Stand facing a window, or go outside on an overcast day. Overhead lights at night make everyone look tired and the shirt look grey.
• A plain background. A wall, a door, a hedge. Anything busy behind you competes with the words.
• Camera at chest height. Shooting from above shrinks the print and the bump, and cuts off everyone's legs.
• Portrait, with room around you. Most apps crop to a tall rectangle or a square, so leave space at the sides and top, and keep the words in the middle.
• Take lots. Use burst mode and pick the one where nobody is blinking. With a toddler or a dog in the picture, expect to take fifty.
• Film the reaction. If you are telling grandparents in person, wear the shirt and set a phone recording before they notice. Their faces will be the best part of the whole announcement.

Sizing around a bump

For the photo itself, your usual size shows the bump best. If you want to keep wearing the shirt into the third trimester, go up a size, particularly with a regular-fit tee. Hoodies with dropped shoulders are forgiving, and they are what you will want to live in after the birth anyway.

To keep the print looking good, wash it inside out on cold and tumble dry on low. Hot washes and high heat are what crack and fade printed shirts over time.

When to announce

There is no rule. Many people wait until after the first trimester, around 12 or 13 weeks, when the chance of miscarriage has dropped; others tell close family much earlier, so they have support whatever happens. Do whatever feels right to you. The shirt will keep.

Order a little ahead
